The Rules

This year we are running two separate competitions - One for Year 9-10 Secondary School Students and the other for University Students. Please scroll down to see the rules relevant for your competition category.

Rules For Secondary School Students

Challenge
• The Challenge involves the submission of a short video designed to translate a scientific topic into a consumer friendly message. All submissions are to be in accordance with these Rules and Regulations. By entering the Challenge you agree that you have read and understand that you are bound by the Rules and Regulations.
• The Challenge opens on 1 June 2013 and submissions close at 6pm (New Zealand time) on 9th August 2013.
• The Challenge Organiser is Comvita Limited.

General
• These Rules and Regulations are subject to change at the discretion of the Challenge Organiser.
• All amendments to the Rules and Regulations will be published on www.comvitasciencechallenge.co.nz (“Website”).
• The Challenge Organiser reserves the right to cancel or amend the Challenge at any time without prior notice. Any changes will be posted on the Website.
• All content must be the original work of the author or authors. In submitting an entry you must make sure you are not breaching any copyright or other intellectual property rights of any third party (including diagrams, photos etc).
• The author retains full ownership of all intellectual property rights in their entry, except for the Comvita Science Challenge logo. However, by submitting an entry, you grant Comvita Limited an ongoing royalty free licence to make use of your submission, without the need to seek further permission. Comvita will ensure you are credited as the author when making any use of your submission.

Entry Format
• Teams must include credits in their video submissions. The submitted video with credits is to be no longer than 3 minutes. Comvita Science Challenge logo must be visible on the top right hand corner of the submitted video together with the credits.
• Content must be scientifically correct. All statements of fact must be supported by published textbooks or published peer-reviewed scientific literature.
• Each submission must be focused on the science of how physical activity positively affects certain aspects of human health (for example, explain how regular exercise helps you prevent Alzheimer’s disease).
• Submissions are not to contain any mention of Comvita Limited or any of its subsidiaries, nor any direct promotion of Comvita or its brands and trademarks, other than the Comvita Science Challenge logo at the ending credits.
• Please register your entry using the form on the How to Enter page after the Challenge has opened on 1 June 2013.
• Entries should be submitted by uploading your video to the Vimeo Link by 6pm (New Zealand time) on 9th August 2013. For assistance with how to upload your video, please see the How to Enter Page.
• The Challenge Organiser reserves the right to remove and disqualify any entry which it determines to be unlawful, defamatory, obscene or otherwise objectionable.


Eligibility
• All members of the team must be either a year 9 or year 10 student enrolled at a New Zealand Secondary School established under the Education Act 1989. Team members must be from the same school.
• Each entering team must have 6 students or less.
• The author or authors must be clearly identified, and any helpers acknowledged on each submission.
• Each team entering the competition must have a mentor who will be responsible for supporting the team and ensuring compliance with the competition rules. The mentor could be a teacher at the team’s school or a parent of a student in the team.
• There is no restriction on the number of entries a team may enter. The Judging Panel and/or Challenge Organiser, however, reserve the right to reject an entry that is not materially different from any other entry made by the same team.
• The Challenge Organiser may disqualify any entry if the Challenge Organiser believes, in its discretion, that the entry is submitted in breach of any of these Rules and Regulations.

Judging and Prizes
• The Challenge Judging Panel will be appointed at the sole discretion of the Challenge Organiser. Every effort will be made to ensure the judges are impartial and suitably qualified.

• Depending on the numbers of applications received, the Challenge Organiser may organise a pre-selection judging panel to select the finalists for the final Judging Panel.
•The Judging Panel will determine the winning team.
• The first prize of NZ $5,000 cash and runner-up prize of NZ $2,000 will be awarded at the sole discretion of the Challenge Judging Panel. Half of the prize money will be awarded to the winning team and the other half will be awarded to the school which the team members attend.
• The decision of the Judging Panel will be final and not subject to review or correspondence.
• The winner will be notified by phone or email. If the winner is unable to be contacted within 10 days the Challenge Organiser may direct the Judging Panel to select an alternative winner.
• The winning team will be required to attend a prize giving on 2 September 2013.
• The Challenge Organiser may at its discretion assist with the travel, and accommodation expenses of one (1) team member to travel to Auckland for the Challenge Prize Giving.
• The winner’s name may be posted on the Website and in other Comvita promotional materials (whether electronic or otherwise), including, without limitation, on the website of Comvita Limited (www.comvita.co.nz). By entering the Challenge you consent to the publication of your name and your entry by the Challenge Organiser in its promotional materials.
• The public will be able to submit feedback on the videos uploaded to the Website. Public Feedback submitted on the videos will be taken into consideration by the Judging Panel but will not determine the Challenge winner.

Special Conditions
• The Challenge Organiser shall not be liable or accountable for any expense, loss, damage or disappointment whatsoever (including but not limited to any consequential, direct or indirect, foreseeable, special, punitive or incidental damage or loss) which is suffered or sustained in connection with the Challenge.
• If for any reason the Challenge is not capable of running as planned because of a cause beyond the control of the Challenge Organiser which corrupts or affects the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Challenge, the Challenge Organiser reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel or terminate, or modify or suspend the Challenge.

Governing Law
• The Challenge, and these Rules and Regulations shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of New Zealand.
• In the event of any dispute regarding the Challenge, these Rules and Regulations or the results, the decision of the Challenge Organiser shall be final.

 

Rules For University Students

Challenge
• The Challenge involves the submission of a game concept and design document and a short video explaining how the game works. All submissions are to be in accordance with these Rules and Regulations. By entering the Challenge you agree that you have read and understand that you are bound by the Rules and Regulations.
• The Challenge opens on 1 June 2013 and submissions close at 6pm (New Zealand time) on 9th August 2013.
• The Challenge Organiser is Comvita Limited.

• Teams must submit both a maximum 3500 words game concept and design document and a video that is no longer than 90 seconds. Comvita Science Challenge logo must be visible on the top right hand corner of the submitted video at the end of the video.
• The content in game concept and design document must follow the Comvita Science Challenge guidelines.
• Register your entry using the form on Register page after the Challenge has opened on 1 June 2013.
• Entries should be submitted by uploading your video to the Vimeo page and submitting the URL to your video as per the instructions on How to Upload Your Video page. Entrants should submit their game concept and design brief document to science.challenge@comvita.com with their team name by 6pm (New Zealand time) on 9 August.
• The Challenge Organiser reserves the right to remove and disqualify any entry which it determines to be unlawful, defamatory, obscene or otherwise objectionable.

• There is no restriction on the number of entries an individual or team may enter. The Judging Panel and/or Challenge Organiser, however, reserve the right to reject an entry that is not materially different from any other entry made by the same individual or team.
• The Challenge Organiser may disqualify any entry if the Challenge Organiser believes, in its discretion, that the entry is submitted in breach of any of these Rules and Regulations.
